Dal Palak

Palak/Keerai/ Cheera is one of the comfort foods we enjoy on a veggie-day. My toddler loves this with a dollop of ghee with white rice and potato fry :). Very easy to make, healthy and tasty dish.

Serves : 3-4

What's in it:

  • Toor dal/Pigeon peas : 1 cup
  • Spinach ( I used Palak; any variety of spinach can be used) : 1 bunch
  • Turmeric powder : 1/2 tsp
  • Asafoetida : a pinch
  • Green chillies : 2 split
  • Salt : to taste

To temper :

  • Mustard seeds: 1 tsp
  • Cumin seeds : 1/2 tsp
  • Red chillies dried : 2-3

Let's do it !

  1. Pressure cook the toor dal with 2-3 cups of water and turmeric powder for 2-3 whistles.
  2. Wash the spinach thoroughly in cold water till all the dirt is gone and it is clean.
  3. Chop the spinach discarding the stem/end part.
  4. Heat 1 tsp oil in a kadai, add the spinach and saute it till it gets wilted a bit.
  5. Add the cooked and mashed toor dal into this, mix well, add required amount of water and salt.
  6. Add green chilies and asafoetida to this.
  7. In a small kadai, temper the ingredients under 'to temper' in a spoon of oil. Pour this to the dal-spinach.
  8. Serve hot with rice, a dollop of ghee and any veggie side dish.
